Eleven miles upstream from where Grasshopper Creek joins with the Beaver Head River in the southwest corner of Montana sits Bannack. Dry and cold, remote, and a former capital of the Montana Territory; the site was home to a productive goldmine. Bannack was declared a National Historic Site in 1961. The last remaining residents left in 1970.
